Filipin@x Faces on NY Stages
Well, we’re here. The opening of a show. It’s the day of the show y’all! I’ve never seen the movie, I only get the reference. Cowgirl Katarungan is Fixin’ to Fight is a script that I’ve had on my mind since Spring of 2022. This year I somehow assembled a team to make it happen and I’m glad I didn’t go at it alone. I’ve had a vision for how to bring it to life. A bit of a crazy obsession. I’ve had the honor to direct and act during the process and now we finally get to share it with the world. Well, 50+ people at Theatre Row. Quite exciting. It feels really amazing and equally terrifying and invigorating to be able to do the work that aligns with my own Artistic Mission. Creating awareness, decolonizing, healing. Holding space for what is and what will be. The truth is I could have done this alone, but there is much more impact as a community and sharing this story amongst Kapwa. I will say this time and time again, I learn from others and Nature. Are there things I wish I could do differently, yes! But am I happy and so fkin proud of this team and of my friends?! YES. What have I learned/re learned so far?
I know how to lead
I am a leader
I am capable of holding space for others
I am capable of being held by others
My vision is a shared dream of the collective
Not sharing it would be a diservice of my talents
If it feels uncomfortable that’s GOOD
Blazing a trail is better with others
I can be proud of myself
Always be prepared. For anything. Everything.
This is my first time back on stage since 2020. It’s been 3 years. This is also my first time directing since 2014. I’m excited to jump into this portal and see what I find and what finds me.
